The Real World? is a 1987 play written by Canadian playwright Michel Tremblay originally written in French, under the title Le Vrai Monde?
It is about a young playwright named Claude who writes his own family into his first play.
Claude returns home and his stage family and his actual family experience the inevitable clash between the written word, where fiction works toward the truth, and the real world where reality papers over lies and omissions.
Does fiction really result in a greater truth? What are the artist’s real motives and is his version of reality any more real than those of the family he depicts?
The Real World? had its English-language premiere at Tarragon theatre in 1988.
